My First look at Droid (and Verizon)
While it’s been out for a while Last week was my first chance to look at the new Droid phone, because you can’t get it in the UK, in fact outside Germany you can’t get it in Europe.
However as I was in the US for thanksgiving I took my longsuffering girlfriend around the Verizon near her parents place in Baltimore. I must say I was impressed, not only with the phone (more on that later) but also with the level of service I received from the Lady in the Verizon on “The Avenue” in Baltimore, we when in and she asked if we wanted any help, I made it quite clear that I couldn’t buy a phone but that didn’t stop her from answering every question I had about the phone.
The phone it’s self is lovely, my partner’s eyesight is going as is her current phone, so I wanted to let her have a play with a full Qwerty keyboard as a slide phone as opposed to my blackberry which she says thinks has keys that are too small. The keyboard on the Droid on the other hand was workable, it also gave a nice tactile feedback, something phones like the iPhone, that lack a physical keyboard clearly lack.
The Phone is selling well, and the 5 mega pix camera appears to be one of the main selling points, as does the openness of the app store. Yes that right non-techie users are turning to Android because of the Apple App store.
Sadly you can’t yet get the Droid in the UK yet, but hopefully when you can it will be on Orange so that I can get one for myself and review the operation of the phone (sadly the model I played with was just a shop display model).
