The Apple iPad, initial thoughts.

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

No Flash support.

Yep thats right, right in the middle of Apples show case event of the year, this screw-up. The iPad’s browser doesn’t support flash.

As TechCrunch pointed out

But the device features browsing as a key element, and there are going to be plenty of people trying to access their casual Flash games and Flash-based video sites, only to be met with that frustrating icon.

Ports.

Err… one, the iPad’s dock, yep thats right no USB connection, no Micro SD connection, unless that is you buy an additional bit of hardware. How nice of Lord Jobs. Instead of building in two industry standards, users are forced to buy extra items with their new iPad. It’s not like the these standards are large and would take away from the oh-so-important design.

Functionality

As one commentator put it,

There is nothing new or revolutionary about this device, it’s just a very large ipod (not even iphone since you can’t call with it).”

nuf said.

So of course fanboys and wannabe will buy it, but for the rest of us? Throes of us who have to earn money and don’t worship SJ? I really think very few people will buy it.

I’d much rather have an xt2, at least that supports multi-tasking.

review – The Web Startup Success Guide

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Bob Walsh’s “The Web Startup Success Guide”, wisely and follows its own advice in targeted very specifically. If you’re a software developer, are thinking about setting up (or have just set up) a product-based start-up, and are prepared to work – damn very very – at something you love doing then this book is for you. Equally importantly, if you’re more than a few months into your start-up, or if this is your second start-up, or if you aren’t a geek, or if you want to set up a consulting business then this book isn’t for you.

It is an outstanding book, if your it’s target audience. There is a lot of information here, but its fast-paced, colloquial writing style make it digestible. What’s more, the book is well thought-out, balanced, well structured and accurate. It’s an excellent combination of fact, anecdote, theory, analysis and practical advice. The interviews alone make it worth buying and reading again and again.

Don’t push – a review of nudge by Thaler & Sanstein

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Most of us involved in web design and social media are what Thaler & Sanstein call choose architects, we present people with a range of options. But how do we get people to select the “right” option (both for them and us)?

This is what Nudge is about. It’s not about pushing people to a decision or forceing their hand but it’s about guiding them to make the best, or at least worse, decision for them.

Even if we’re not running an eCommerce site or selling CRM software we still present people with chooses, that we want them to make that are good for them as well as us, signing-up for news letters for example, or thinking about this or that issue in such or such away.

The book, by going through a number of case studies, giving examples both of when nudges have occurred and helped everyone and when they haven’t and it’s resulted in a poor deal for everyone, shows the user the power of nudges and the right way to do them

Nudge is available as a paperback and as a hardback book, and out now
