I recently post on facebook that I think TV is shit and that the Internet is much better. And that I would pay a monthly subscription for access to streaming, on-demand video of my favorite shows.

A number of my friends where shocked by this, unable to believe that I thought that. Not that they think the Internet is devoid of content, just that they don’t see how it’s better than television.

So here is my analysis and an explanation as to why I feel the “New” media of the Internet is better than the “Old” media of TV.

Let me throw a couple of definition at you.

GS = Good stuff, a general term for good content either interesting web sites, or a good film or show, I’m only referring to good stuff for the user, and I’m not making any judgment as to what is good and what isn’t.

BS = Bad stuff, the opposite of Good stuff, stuff that is not of interest to the user.

For a typical user I’m making the assumption that for both Television and for the Internet GS/BS is the same (ie. There is the same percentage of good content on Television as on the Internet).

So if tv[GS/BS] = net[GS/BS] then their appears to be nothing in it, it makes no difference as to if you get your content from the internet or from television.

However this misses an important point about the difference between tv and the net, television is can only be accessed sequentially (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequential_access) and the internet is direct access (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_access) this means that for tv you are forced to watch shows when the suppler wants you to watch them, and (unless you risk copyright law, since recording a television program is in effect copyright theft (the Sony Vs. TV companys rulling hasn’t changed that fact)) can’t re-watch them unless your suppler allows you to (and again it’s at their direction as too when that is).

Also since TV is Sequential if you decide you wish to consume the media, you are forced to watch the BS until you get to the GS you want.

Yes I you can turn the television off, however I choose to consume the media at the time I have time to do so, and fundamentally that why the Internet is better than Television, because I can select what I want to watch in the limited time I allow my self to consume such media.

More than three quarters of the small business surveyed said they didn’t find that social networks generated leads or expanded their business.

That’s a shocking figure, especially as we reported in back in September that you can? So what’s the scoop? Did I lie in September? Has CitiBank made a mess of the numbers? The real answer, as I alluded to back in September, is neither. Social media, just as with anything in business needs to be done correctly and not under the illusion that it’s some type of magic bullet. You need to know your market, are you’re the type that use social media or are they going to be more at home with a print advert? What do you want out of it? How are you going to get that?

Fundamentally social media is a tool, and just as with any tool if you use it incorrectly (or use the wrong tool in the first place) going to have a hard job getting it to do what you want it to do.

And this situation is made worse by two groups of people, one understandably the other unforgivably. The first group is throes small business, and it’s understandable that they make mistakes. The whole social media thing looks so simple stick up a facebook fan page or get a twitter account, and suddenly the whole world and his dog will be knocking at your door. Sadly it takes effort, time and planning before that will happen, effort because you have to publicise your facebook fan page or twitter stream to the right people, which means figuring out who they are and how to do that, and effort because you have to update content all the time, and respond to your fan’s.

Time because unsurprisingly that takes time, time to do and time to reap the rewards of. I advise clients to plug away with their social networking plans for at least six months before they look at if they are working. Because that’s how long it takes for people to trust your twitter stream or facebook page, and start acting on the things you want them to do.

And lastly it takes planning, you wouldn’t rush head long into a product redesign just because this year everyone’s talking about how cool red is (have you ever seen red fries?) yet I’ve seen organisations rush head long into social media projects without even asking themselves what they want out of it. Needless to say throes projects fail (well they success in a way, since they have no goals they meet throes goals…. ). And there are another group of people who must share at least part of the blame. People like me. Consultants, consultants who should know better but who push half baked projects onto organisation in order to make a quick buck, but in doing so they not only damage the image of social media but the companies they work for and their own reputations.

In an as yet unpublished scientific study two MIT students have shown that you can predict a person’s sexuality and religion as well as other personally information not just by studding them, but their facebook friends as well.

This sounds shocking until you think about it… Gay men tend to have more gay friends than straight men… that are not unsurprising, nor is it unsurprising that people with similar political or religious views like to hang out together.

Anyone with an insight into network theory would be able to tell you that. What’s interesting is that you can put numbers on it.

Facebook has long had the facility to tag photo’s of your friends and family, in fact it’s often cited as one of the main reasons people switched from MySpace to it. However until recently you haven’t been able to tag your friends in your status.

Now you can! Well maybe you can, it’s something that facebook have been rolling out over the last few week’s I believe however not everyone has the ability to tag their friends.

So why? Why would you want to tag them? Traditionally facebook’s status has been a fairly private thing, it tended to be just about what you where up to and what you did, that because it tended only to be a very few who read it. Then last year facebook had a big change, and when’t real time, allowing users to see and comment on their friends up-dates with ease, and with it the way we use facebook our status up-dates changed as well.

Just as the 2008 upgrade due in part to the explosion in use of a new social media tool, Twitter, so the ablity to tag status upgrade is lifted from the same tool. In twitter for throes who don’t know, you can tag your friends by prefixing their user name with an @ symbol (see below for how this looks in real life).

tag a person in facebook

Facebook have taken this and ran with it, with this upgrade you can not only tag people but also events, fan pages, events and applications.

tag a fan page in facebook

tag an application in facebook

These messages are then posted to your wall as well as throes of everyone you’ve taged.

It will be interesting to see if re-tweeting (or RT’ing), the twitter practice of re-posting an update while citing the original author gets a facebook equivalent (re-facing maybe :)

Let us know what you think about this twitter inspired taging, will you use it? Is it too much like twitter? Or do you think it’s a waste of time?

Thats what makes the the resent McKinsey Quarterly “Global Survey” so interesting, they asked companies about the benefits gained from using various Web 2.0 tools, both internally and externally. Blogs and video where seen as important tools for both internally and externally however surprisingly microbloging services (read twitter) where seen as much less useful. If that is just down to a currently low take-up of such services by non tech businesses, of if twitter really isn’t the best way to reach an audience, is maybe something that need further research, however anecdotal evidence suggests it’s the forma.

Technologies such as wikis, podcasts, ratings and tags were less useful, but still benefited customer relationships for about one-quarter to one-third of companies worldwide.

More than one-half of respondents (52%) said Web 2.0 tools increased marketing effectiveness, while 43% reported higher customer satisfaction and 38% reduced marketing costs.

Businesses in the high-tech/telecom industry were most likely to report customer-related benefits of Web 2.0, at 65%, followed by business/legal/professional services firms, at 60%.

Companies cannot simply adopt these technologies and expect their customers to use them en masse, however. Among firms reporting measurable benefits from Web 2.0, 74% said it was important to integrate the tools with other forms of customer interaction, and 52% said marketing the Web 2.0 initiatives themselves was a best practice.

OK so your all set, you have a nice web site, you know the basics of how to use social media to your advantage, and now… How the hell do you find the people who may be interested in your project?

The answer… Google

Google has a whole range of free, easy to use tools that can help you make the most of social media and the Internet.

First off iGoogle, Google’s nice and fancy front end. Based on netvibes iGoogle allows you to add widgets to Google’s search front page (only you see your widgets of course) Google mail, Google notebook, Google Calendar, and RSS reader and Google Doc’s (as well as a phase of the moon widget, but I think you’ll be more interested in the others).

This allows me to use Google’s home page as a one-stop-shop for how the areas of interest my customers have is going, as well as my e-mail and project management tools. It’s really what I link everything else in with.

Next Google Alerts, Google Alerts allows you to set up an RSS feed (that goes into my Google RSS Reader) for any keywords, this allows you to be able to comment on any story that Google picks up that relates to your product.

Google Alerts currently offers 6 variations of alerts – ‘News’, ‘Web’, ‘Blogs’, ‘Comprehensive’, ‘Video’ and ‘Groups’.

A ‘News’ alert is an email aggregate of the latest news articles that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of your Google News search.

A ‘Web’ alert is an email aggregate of the latest web pages that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top twenty results of your Google Web search.

A ‘Blogs’ alert is an email aggregate of the latest blog posts that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of your Google Blog search.

A ‘Comprehensive’ alert is an aggregate of the latest results from multiple sources (News, Web and Blogs) into a single email to provide maximum coverage on the topic of your choice.

A ‘Video’ alert is an email aggregate of the latest videos that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top ten results of your Google Video search.

A ‘Groups’ alert is an email aggregate of new posts that contain the search terms of your choice and appear in the top fifty results of your Google Groups search.

I recommend you go for A ‘Comprehensive’ alert for the major keywords you found in step 1.

This Twitter, Facebook, MySpace (or whatever your targeted social media sites are) searches should provide you with enough information to start to pick-up on the on-line vibe, and allow you to start making your self known (in the right way) to the community.

OK disclaimer, I’ve worked and retail and have a lot of sympathy with this view. However the BBC have found that

“Staff at shops owned by the Dixons Stores Group have been caught insulting customers on a social networking site.“

OK this is a bit of a PR nightmare for Dixon, what is it to do? My guess is it doesn’t have a Social Media policy, and hasn’t got anyone to sign anything to say they won’t insult the company or shoppers on-line. So DSGi hasn’t got a leg to stand on.

However DSGi employees are not alone, Wilkinson employees cast doute over the mental health of their customers.

Even the BBC has a group where people cast dotes on the legitimacy of the BBC’s operation.

So what the answer? Well Dixon’s could and probably should start an internal staff forum, that however won’t stop the problem, but that and a Social Media policy that lets staff know the boundary would at least help.

However fundamentally none of the Dixons staff are wedded to dixons, if you pay low wages you get people who view their job as a throw-a-way job, and of course the real losers in this are the staff themselves, anyone checking the social media sites for a new employees history isn’t going to be very pleased at what they fine.

You may not of heard of Zynga, but if you use Facebook, the chances are you’ve played or at least know of their games, that are the makers of “Texas Hold’em” and “Farmville” and the $1Million a month “Maffia wars” and this year likely to pull in $100 million just from facebook games.

So how does a small browser based game company manage to pull in over $100 Million a year? The answer is micro payments. Yep the $5 for 21 game credits, all add up.

As you can see it doesn’t heart that Zynga also owns, in terms of monthly active users, four of the top ten games on Facebook and five of the top 25, and the million or so they spent on advertising Farmville appears to have paid off as well.

$100 million selling virtual goods? We’ll admit, it shocked us too. So we managed to pin Zynga’s CEO Mark Pincus down for a quick on-line interview.

NWW: How’s growth?

Pincus: We’ve grown from about 2 million daily active users this time last year to close to 18 million daily active users as of yesterday. In the last quarter we grew 60% from 8 million daily active users to 13 million. The majority of our growth has come from growing our core games. They’ve grown almost every week since they’ve been launched. Poker just passed 3 million DAU on Facebook and 4 million overall.

NWW: One criticism of Zynga is that it’s in an entirely hits-driven business. Is that true? And if so, how do you make hits repeatable?

Our business is predicated on running games as a service. Our growth comes more from integrating great new features into our existing games than from launching new games. In the game industry, other than World of Warcraft, you are only as good as your next launch. But all our games are built into a social network and a way for people to communicate. We think as long they are a fun way to connect with your friends users will keep coming back. In Poker, 70% of the time people log-in, a friend of theirs is already logged-in. 25% of the time they start their Poker session by joining a friend.

NWW: Still, hits are important.

If we can launch one new hit game every two quarters, that’s awesome.

Farmville was a hit, Guild of Heroes was a big flop. One thing I think we can get better at is failing faster. We’ll keep trying to innovate and trying new games, but the key that will differentiate us is how quickly we pull the plug on something that’s a flop or even worse, in the middle. The thing that can kill your company is a mediocre hit that you work at for a couple years.

NWW: So how do that — avoid launching a flop or a middling success?

There’s two ways of making not only games, but any consumer Internet service: the intuitive approach and the data-driven approach. They can both work. Google is very intuitive. Facebook is very intuitive. They don’t take the cake out of the oven until its a cake they want to eat. Playfish has said that’s how they do it: ‘We know a game is ready for release when everyone in our office is playing it.’ We try to combine the inuitive with the analytical. Everyone in our office did like Guild of Heroes and we killed it because the metrics sucked.

NWW: How fast is Zynga the company growing?

We’ve grown to 310 fulltime, 390 including contractors. That’s more than double where we were in November. We’ve actually tried to slow down the growth a little bit. At the same time, we’ve brought on some great senior executives and promoted some people internally who’ve become rock stars.

NWW: Anybody we know?

Vish Makhijani ran search at Yahoo. He joined our company as SVP and in the first quarter he was with us we promoted him to COO. He’s now running all of the business and operations side, which lets me focus more on the games. Mike Verdu, he ran EA’s LA studio. He’s already running some key parts of the company. Brian Reynolds was one of the founders of Big Huge Games. He was the creator of Civilization II and he created my favorite game, Rise of Nations. He started a new studio for us in Maryland.

NWW: Any other secret locations we should know about?

The rest are secret secret.

NWW: Facebook has had lots of success expanding Facebook Connect and now its even experimenting with something called “Pay With Facebook,” which we think could be a real competitor to PayPal. Is that something you see as well?

If ‘Pay With Facebook’ follows FB Connect around the Web it could grow to be a competitor to Pay Pal in a very short time. PayPal was built on eBay and this is an eBay-sized audience. If Facebook users start transacting, Facebook could be that intermediary and Facebook could make a revenue stream as big as their ad revenues.

NWW: Critics say you’re not a gamer and that you don’t have a gaming industry pedigree.

I was a hardcore addicted gamer until I was 16. And after that, like most other people, I would only play on drinking nights in college and that was it. I had no time. I feel a real affinity to the mass market audience who are not out looking for games. There are hardcore gamers who are adults who feel really passionate about console games and there’s a broader audience that will even buy Nintendo Wii games. We’re after an even broader audience that will not even go to a destinations games site — people who would love a five-minute World of Warcraft. Three-minutes to learn, five-minutes to play: that’s who I am.

NWW: Is Zynga profitable?

We’re profitable and we’ve been profitable break-even or profitable every month since September 2007. We haven’t spent a dollar of our venture capital [~$39 million —Ed.]. We do spend a lot of money on advertising when we want to, like when we launched Farmville. We spent a couple million dollars advertising it and we’re not shy about that.

Yes that’s right, the home of the Big Mac, McDonald’s has more than 1,000,000 fans on facebook, 1.2 Million in fact.

But look at the 25th of Aug and then again on the 27th… what happened their?

Well some commentates suggest that McDonald has asked Facebook to close it’s nonofficial fan pages and fold them into it’s main page. It’s not the first time either. As that post points out their are a number of ways of making sure that you as the owner of the brand get control of your fan page. However not handling this correctly could be social media suicide, imagine if you where part of a happy fan based, fan centered, fan page on facebook, a community you’ve spent maybe years fostering, only to have the company your a fan of pull the rug from under your feet, without even a thank you for the hard work you’ve put into it.

Not the best way to treat your fan is it?

So the question is how did McDonald handle it? did you run a McDonald fan page before the 25th only to find you didn’t after the 27th? If so we’de love to hear your story.

An on-line petition calling for the UK Prime Minister to apologize for the prosecution of Alan Turing has received tens of thousands of signatures.

Alan Turing was the greatest computer scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing, helped break the Nazi Enigma code and told us how to tell whether a machine could think.

He was also gay. He was prosecuted for being gay, chemically castrated as a ‘cure’, and took his own life, aged 41.

The petition, which is due to close on January the 20th 2010, has been signed by over 13,000 people. To sign it you have to be either a UK citizen or resident in the UK. However if your not you can still help write the wrong, and get an apology for this man who so much of the world owes so much to, by re-posting, re-tweeting, up dating your status etc. in other words just letting people know about this petition.

The twitter start-up TipJoy has closed it doors, you can still sign-in and access your funds, but the start-up has had nothing but praise lavished upon it, by everyone from @ev and a hole host of start-up backers and incubates, but still it failed. So why? maybe tipjoy but it best themselves, in their last blog post

the reason is that a 3rd party payment service doesn’t add enough value.

So that’s the end for payments via social media? Maybe not, Ivan Kirigin the now ex-CTO of TipJoy has been hired by facebook, and in the same blog post Ivan & Abby say

We strongly believe that social payments will work on a social network, provided that they’re done within the platform and not as a 3rd party

So will the TipJoy code base find it’s self a new life within facebook payments?

This original HOW TO was is by Stan Schroeder and was first posted to Mashabul, I’d like to credit the original author and the blog I lifted it from, to put it bluntly it’s a wonderful article and I thought it should have a wider airing.

Do you constantly have 99 new notifications, marked with the little red button at the bottom right in your Facebook account? Would you like to only receive important notifications, such as comments from friends, and skip the stuff various applications send you? Read on.

This isn’t a new feature, but I’m always amazed at how many people simply endure thousands of notifications and updates from applications and pages, without ever bothering to simply turn them off. Here’s a couple of ways to do it.

Click on the “Notifications” buttom at the bottom right corner in Facebook. Click on “See All.” On the right, you’ll see a long list of every application that sends you notifications, and you can turn them off by unchecking them. Be careful, Facebook’s own applications which are probably useful to you, such as feed comments, are also on the list, so you’ll probably want to leave them checked.

Alternatively, in the small notifications roll-up window on the bottom right, an “x” will appear as you hover the mouse pointer over individual notifications. Clicking on it will remove any further notifications from that application.

Finally, for additional fine tuning, you can click on Settings in the main menu, then on “Application Settings”. Choose “Authorized” from the drop down menu. Many applications actually have quite a lot of privileges. For example, some are able to “Access my data even when I’m not using the application,” “Send me emails” and
“Publish recent activity to my wall.” From here, you can turn all of those off without actually removing the application.

Now, you can do the same for Updates. Click on “Updates” in the menu on the same page (you can reach the page by clicking on “Inbox” from the main menu), and then click on “Updates Settings” on the right. From there, you can control which updates you receive. Save changes, and you’re done.

That’s all! Enjoy your new, nag-free Facebook.

Today the head of the Catholic church in England and Wales claimed Facebook was a Suicide risk, Archbishop Vincent Nichols, said that “I think there’s a worry that an excessive use or an almost exclusive use of text and emails means that as a society we’re losing some of the ability to build interpersonal communication that’s necessary for living together and building a community.” and that “Among young people often a key factor in them committing suicide is the trauma of transient relationships. They throw themselves into a friendship or network of friendships, then it collapses and they’re desolate.”

But is their any truth to this claim? Does facebook, MySpace etc lead to transient relationships? And does that in turn lead to an increase in risk of Suicide?

Their is at least some anecdotal evidence to suggest that this may be the case, Just last week for example Megan Gillan, a student at Macclesfield High School in Cheshire, committed suicide because she was bullied via Bebo.

However if you look closer at this sad story, you notice something, yes the bulling happened on-line via a social networking site, however the bulling, according to the telegraph, consisted of posting “spiteful messages online about her appearance and clothing“. Unless throses people know her in real life how could they post messages about her? So this sad case is in fact nothing more than an extension of the bulling that happens, sadly, on a daily basis in most of our schools.

I have a friend in Scotland, some 400 miles away from where I live, I get to see him about once or twice a year, however we keep in contact on a daily basis, via e-mail, text messages, and sometimes via facebook. In years gone by, I would have done so via letter. I wonder if either Archbishop Vincent Nichols or the Telegraph would think letter writing as a gateway to suicide? That’s not to negate the very real issue of bulling (Both on and off line), and their need to be an raised awareness of the issues around this, however facebook, myspace, letter writing and speaking are all just tools to aid communication, no better and no worse than each other (but useful in different ways).

The BBC’s article

The Telegraph Article

As an Internet consultant (I have to think of a better title than this to describe what I do), I’m often asked by clients, especially the ones pushed for time and money, which Social Network they should target in there on-line campaign, Should they have a MySpace, Facebook and Twitter presence or just push all their efforts into one of the big three?

It’s a difficult question to answer, partly it comes down to how they envisage social media playing a role in there corporate strategy, what type of information they aim to push out that way etc. However it’s also useful to know who’s using the different networks, after all you can always tailer your message to the media, but you can’t tailer the demographic.

This is where a new report by Anderson Analytics is very useful. This report presents that all important demographic data for the big four social networks, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Social media use by age group

Unsurprisingly, use by 13 to 14 year old’s of the business SN, LinkedIn is zero, it’s also not surprising that Facebook dominates all ages. Does this mean that Myspace and Twitter are useless? Far from it, The fact twitter is used not primary by one age range suggests that it is a useful platform where age is not a deciding factor in the products success, for example education. While the 13-14 year olds may be a little too young to be thinking about college just yet, you will be ready when they do start looking.

According to PCWorld, Twitter has suspended the accounts of users infected with the Koobface worm. Koobface, waits for the infected users to login to a social networking site (like twitter, facebook, myspace etc) and then uses their profile to post messages including a link to the worm, which that users friends then click on, get infected etc…

It’s a brave move by Twitter, suspending the accounts could have a negative impact on throes infected and their contact. But, for everyone else it should show that twitter is acting reasonably.

If you’ve been infected with this worm, then you are recommended to install up-to-date anti-virus software like AVG and don’t click on a link sent by anyone you don’t know unless you’re sure it’s something you want (bit.ly for example lets you find the real URL of a shortened one).

I’m currently writing an application for facebook, most of this application will happen within an iframe, since I’m going to have to play with the layout etc. and I can’t figure out how to pass link to other pages facebook.
This all works well, until you try and transfer any data that someone may want to amend as links.
The normal way I’d do this is by passing values through cookies and POST. However, firstly this isn’t the most secure way of doing things, and secondly I won’t have the users password etc. I’ll just have to trust it’s facebook that calling the page, and not that it’s being called directly.

So I came up with a way of securing the information that is being transmitted by POST. That is to add a test variable to the POST string, and then check it on the other end. Of course someone could just recreate the hash of the variables and pass that, so for added security I’ve inserted a secret phrase and a date stamp to the hash.
This will work fine as long as the page isn’t opened before midnight and the link followed after (otherwise the date will be different and so will the hash) So, I’ve the checking routine checks not only the day, but the day before as well.

The existing documentation for writing Facebook applications is, while quite good for writing miss two important facts.

Firstly output goes to the “Canvas” page, and there needs to be something output there (even if you then redirect to the user to their profile page afterwards)

Secondly to get output to the “Profile Box” you need to post the FBML (FaceBook Mark-up Language) via Facebooks API to the profile box, in PHP this is done with the following code.

$facebook->api_client->profile_setFBML(NULL, $user_id, $profile, NULL, $mobile_profile, $profile_main);

Where $user_id is the Unique facebook id of the user (saved from when they login to your app)

$profile, $mobile_profile and $profile_main hold the FBML intended for the application profile box that appears on the Boxes tab on the user’s profile, the Mobile phones and the front end narrow boxes in that order.

You can, of course, use PHP and whatever database your hosting provides to display stuff in throes boxes, but be careful as not all FBML tags are supported in the profile boxes and the canvas page.
